Already up? Scamper knows

If your iPhone counted 150 or more steps (by default) between two hours and five minutes before the alarm, Scamper treats you as already up and Stop works like a normal alarm. The same happens when you're away from home. Strict alarms ignore both and always need the tag.

The rules, in order

  • Strict alarm: always needs the tag.
  • Already up (150+ steps in the window, by default): Stop works.
  • Away from home: Stop works.
  • At home: scan the tag.
  • Location unknown: scan the tag (you can change this in Settings).

Why the five-minute gap

Steps in the last few minutes before the alarm don't count, so a quick trip to the bathroom right before it rings doesn't switch the alarm off.

How the home check works

Scamper uses Always location access so iOS can tell it whenever you enter or leave the area around your home (150 m by default), at any time, not only when an alarm rings. Scamper keeps only the latest home or away state and when it changed, on your iPhone. Setting your home takes one location fix when you tap Set home to where I am now.

Questions

How does Scamper know I'm away from home?

You set a home location once. iOS then tells Scamper whenever you enter or leave that area. Scamper keeps only the latest home or away state, on your iPhone, not a location history.

Mornings, sorted.

Scamper works with any cheap NFC sticker. Free to download when it lands on the App Store.
